'The book approaches equine medicine and surgery from a slightly different angle. As the title suggests it focuses exclusively on the geriatric horse. The book is divided into 24 chapters which have been authored by well-known contributors such as J.L. Traub-Dargatz (Equine Endoscopy, 1997) and Gordon J. Baker, an Onderstepoort graduate (Equine Dentistry, 2005)...Of particular relevance in my opinion is the chapter on how aging affects the response to exercise in the horse. Much has been written about age-related changes in the human athlete but there is a relative paucity of information on the aged equine athlete, particularly the type of information that would be accessible to the horse owner and rider. This chapter emphasises that old horses do not necessarily need to be retired nor should they be trained the same as a young horse. The text is well-written throughout although the writing style varies from chapter to chapter. Some authors make use of tables and boxes to highlight specific concepts, notably treatment or management regimes, diagnostic tests and lists of differential diagnoses. Most chapters are well illustrated by means of black and white photographs of high quality. These pictures include endoscopy images, radiographs, micrographs, ECG tracings, echocardiographs and photographs of post mortem specimens. Unfortunately, some of these lose impact, notably those in the chapters on ocular disorders and neoplasia... Every chapter has extensive and current references, some authors have added a suggested reading list and the book is well indexed. In my opinion, this work is a valuable addition to the library of equine practitioners, veterinary students and any person who deals with old horses on a day to day basis.' karen Bohme.
