“This is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary presentation of the pathophysiology, treatment options, types and variety of complications that primary care clinicians and specialists will encounter in patients in their daily practice of medicine. The breadth of the information makes the monograph valuable for nurses and other medical professionals as well, giving them a broader picture than they may have gotten previously. The majority of the chapters are articles published from 2012 through 2014. The beginning articles focus on the specific issue of obesity in children. Other articles cover the association of obesity and secondary disorders such as nonalcoholic fatty liver, gastroesophageal reflux, sleep disorders, asthma, and diabetic kidney disease. Interesting articles focus on the association of obesity and chronic hepatitis C and insulin-like growth hormones. The treatment section discusses dietary and surgical management with minimal mention of any pharmacological treatments. In line with the multidisciplinary approach, on article discusses the potential role of sports psychology in the obesity epidemic.
This is a provocative addition to a primary care clinician’s library, providing both an update perspective and a reference. " Weighted Numerical Score: 92 – 4 Stars! -- Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences) for Doody's Review Service. October 2015.
